How can LDSJournal be FREE?‌

We asked ourselves, "Should LDSJournal be a FREE service, or should everyone have to pay?"

Ultimately, we decided that LDSJournal had to be FREE. Our goals for creating this service were to help people keep a record of their lives and make journaling more fun and accessible than ever before. We concluded that there must be a powerful FREE version that anybody could use forever. Soon, we will offer an upgraded service with more storage and features for power-journalers, but there will always be a FREE version of LDSJournal.com so all can participate in the new journaling revolution!
Below, we have answered some common questions and concerns from LDSJournal.com members and others who are interested in the service but need more answers before choosing to use a FREE web-based journaling solution such as LDSJournal.com. If you have a concern or question not mentioned in this list, please feel free to contact us by clicking here.

Who created LDSJournal?

A: LDSJournal.com is a property of "lds²" (pronounced 'L-D-S Squared') which is an LDS-owned web development company created by LDS members who saw the need for an online journaling solution that takes advantage of the wonderful technologies we use every day. LDSJournal is NOT affiliated or owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Doesn't it cost money to operate and maintain LDSJournal? How long can this service last when you aren't charging people to use the service?

A: LDSJournal.com is designed to be a FREE service to allow anyone the opportunity to record their lives for their posterity. We have designed our business model to allow for a FREE version of our service to be operated at no charge, indefinitely. That said, we do generate revenue from our advertisers (which are chosen by hand and pre-screened) who pay a fee to place an ad on our site. We also seek advertisers that offer value and/or a special benefit/discount of their services to our members.

In addition to the FREE service, LDSJournal.com will be offering an upgraded GOLD service that costs $29.95 per year (about $2.50 per month) and offers more storage, additional features, and special discounts on other value-added services. And LDSJournal will provide other offline services that help to offset the cost of our FREE service.

I'm concerned that if I fill up my FREE account that I'll be forced to upgrade.

A: We are not in the business of trying to 'trick' people into paying for our service and our users will never be forced to upgrade. You may continue to write in your FREE account indefinitely without worrying about storage for your text entries. For system performance reasons, every entry is limited to approximately 20,000 words, but you may continue to create new entries forever. The only thing we do place a limit on is the storage of photos and multimedia. The FREE account offers you 100MB of storage for photos and multimedia Footnotes. LDSJournal automatically optimizes the photos to a smaller file size to maximize your account storage. A FREE account can hold approximately 1,000 standard digital camera photos.
We get to provide a great service to the world
There is absolutely a non-monetary motivation for producing LDSJournal that drives us all and that is the fact that we are helping people do something that will make a huge impact in their lives and the lives of their children. This is evidenced by the incredible testimonials we receive every day from people like you who share touching, emotional stories, about the difference LDSJournal is making in their lives. It is for our members and the good that all of you will create with LDSJournal that makes us want to work harder to make LDSJournal.com the best journaling service in the world.

Let's be real, LDSJournal.com is a business
We would not have created LDSJournal and invested so much time in developing the technology if there wasn't some kind of business model that would allow us to sustain this business. The reality is only a high-quality service that delivers a great user experience will survive. Our mission is to provide a different kind of online experience where the members are seen as valued clients and not a database of numbers that can be exploited behind the scenes. We want to bring integrity and trust to our community and feel that the way we have designed LDSJournal is a powerful example of how that is being accomplished.

We will offer other products and services
We are creating LDSJournal GOLD for those who require more than what the FREE service delivers. It costs $29.95 per year or about $2.50 per month and offers more storage, additional features like email synchronization, and special discounts on our other services. Additional revenue will be generated from our journal printing service where you can archive your online journal to a professionally bounded book. There are numerous other features and services in the works that will be highly valued by our members and will help keep LDSJournal.com running forever!

We get to see our vision unfold
We are in the process of developing other online properties that will work hand-in-hand with LDSJournal.com and will bring great value to our members. We believe the community experience we are creating will not only be valuable to you, but will change how our members will use the Web.
